Project Partners: Practical Action
Background
In Bangladesh, as with many other developing states, the majority of rural households depend on wood for their main source of fuel. In many cases, this is coming from unsustainable sources. Food is cooked on open fires which tend to be very inefficient and smoky – which can have a detrimental effect on the women who use them.

The Project
For many years, Practical Action (formerly ITDG) has worked in Bangladesh to promote the use of efficient cooking stoves. These reduce the amount of fuel used, saving emissions, as well as reducing the amount of smoke in the kitchens. The project involved running course in villages to show local women how to build efficient stoves.
The focus of the project was communities in the north of the country. Many villages received training over a period of 18 months, with thousands of stoves being built.

Monitoring
Climate Care have worked with Practical Action to calculate the fuel savings and emissions reductions achieved by these stoves. Practical Action has also kept records of the number of stoves built in each of the villages.
