Project partners: Department of Environment, St. Lucia
Background
St. Lucia is a small island developing state. Virtually all of its electricity is generated from oil, which must be imported and contributes to high CO2 emissions per kWh of generation.

The Project
Climate Care worked with the Ministry of Housing, Physical Development and Environment to install 6,000 energy efficient lamps in the island. As elsewhere, these use 80% less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs. However, their cost makes them too expensive for most householders.

Climate Care’s Involvement
Climate Care provided the Ministry with 6,000 CFLs for installation. The programme was launched at Energy Awareness Week in December 2004. The main recipients were householders and hotels on the island. Community workers provided householders with the lamps and gave them information about their use and energy saving benefits.
Monitoring
The St. Lucia Electricity Board provided calculated the emissions reductions achieved through installing 6,000 low energy lamps. The Ministry of Social Transformation is keeping a record of where the lamps were installed. Climate Care are currently developing a plan to monitor the use of the lamps over time.
